This is such a powerful psychological effect that those experiencing it rarely know it. It blinds them to their hypocrisy, they cling to delusional thinking, they close the door to new information and they defend their indefensible position. Normally rational intelligent people have turned into unrecognizable caricatures spouting a common party line. Unbelievable.
